As well as the mildest climate in Spain and ranking high amongst the World Health Organisation’s healthiest places to live, the Costa Calida enjoys over 200km of beautiful coastline within the region of Murcia.
Murcia City itself is an ancient, Mediterranean and hospitable city. The old quarter is made up of a maze of narrow streets around the Cathedral which was built between the 14th and 18th centuries.
As is common throughout Spain, the province of Murcia benefits from a diverse programme of festivities: carnivals (February), Easter (March/April), the Spring Festivals (March/April), the Fair of Murcia (September), and Christmas which, together with cinema, theatre and music festivals, conferences and art exhibitions, comprise the city’s dynamic culture. Easter is the perfect time to visit Murcia to see a traditional Spanish fiesta – Semana Santa.
There are a great number of bars and squares where you can enjoy a delicious appetiser in the open air. The most well–known Murcian tapas include: pisto, zarangollo and la ensalada murciana, all of which are prepared with vegetables from the rich Murcian markets.
The most pleasant parts of the city, indeed the most typically Murcian, are to be found around the gardens on the banks of the River Segura. A wide variety of fruits and vegetables are grown not only for the Spanish domestic market but also for export to the rest of Europe. For this reason Murcia is often referred to as La Huerta de Europa: The Market Garden of Europe.
